Large 11627 McLaren 620R British supercar maker McLaren has announced the road-legal version of its GT4 race car – the 620R.

Limited to just 350, McLaren claims that the 620R retains the DNA of a fully homologated track car yet is free from the restrictions that race regulations apply.

The 620R has the same 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine used in the GT4 car. The ECU engine and turbocharger management are reconfigured to achieve 620PS (610bhp), making it the most powerful Sports Series car ever, according to the manufacturer.

Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive, said, “The McLaren 570S GT4 is a first-class GT race car that has won races in every championship it has competed in since its first appearance in 2017 is attracting an increasing number of customer racing teams.

“Now, in response to repeated customer requests, we have homologated that class-leading package for the road in the new McLaren 620R, a limited-edition, 620PS superlight coupé that is the perfect choice for an enthusiast wanting an authentic motorsport driving sensation – and performance to match – on both track and road.”

The 620R also benefits from the adjustable coilover damper version of the race car, with 32 individual settings available per corner. Its cornering performance is further enhanced by stiffer anti-roll bars, carbon-ceramic brakes and ultra-stick Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tyres.

The 620R has been engineered to run on slick tyres, without the need for additional mechanical adjustment. This means that if weather conditions allow, on arrival at the circuit, owners can either fit a second set of wheels or change their tyres, and go straight on the track without further delay.

McLaren said the revised aero package, highlighted by a giant adjustable rear wing, helps the vehicle develop 185 kilograms of downforce at 155 mph (250 km/h).

The 620R has no floor carpet, no glove box, no air conditioning, no IRIS navigation and no audio system. The manufacturer has stated that all of these items are removed to help keep the weight down, but they can all be installed at no extra cost.

Driver and passenger are secured by six-point racing harnesses, fitted as standard, in super-light carbon fibre racing seats. The McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) system is also displayed on a centre-mounted seven-inch touchscreen.

All three exterior colours available as standard on the 620R are inspired by GT4 race cars – McLaren Orange (with white racing stripes), Silica White (orange stripes) or Onyx Black (orange stripes) – and each can be fitted with race number decals and/or partner decals.
